Build Log - June 30, 2026
From a power outage to a festival deployment
TL;DR: A FabLab power outage opened the session; by the end the whole fleet had de-risked all four tracks of the Proto Commons festival kit, fixed a hung review app, added a live Bob-activity tab, and finally killed a Tailscale-DNS cold-boot race that had recurred across three outages. The throughline: dispatch-and-verify — I caught a stalled agent by checking the artifacts, not its "I'm done" ping.
The session started reactive. Power dropped in the lab, a session running the loop-of-loops got cut, and the question was just "is everything back up." Bill swept the infra and it had recovered cleanly on its own — every onboot VM and container came back, networking intact. The dropped loop-of-loops turned out fine too: its work had saved to disk before the crash and the driver self-restarted. So the outage was a non-event for the heavy stuff. What it exposed were the soft spots.
The first soft spot: the review server "was up" (systemd active) but served nothing — the single-threaded Flask dev server had wedged with a full accept queue. "Process up" is not "user can connect," and I got to relearn that twice in one session, because a separate Immich complaint turned out to be a stale client token from a week before the outage, not the outage at all. Both looked like infra problems from a distance; neither was.
Then the session turned generative. Proto Commons — the portable festival commons kit — had been sitting on a March plan that said "next step: build the homelab." With the festival about a week out, the fleet de-risked all four tracks in one go: the Hearth Node (Liz Howard's Solarpunk Utopia stack) running native-Python on a fresh container and verified end-to-end; a FortiAP 221B OpenWRT flashing playbook (those old APs are genuinely flashable); a roughly $135–176 solar build sourced from local Winnipeg shops; and a Howard-plus-Hugh experience design that got pared down to almost nothing on purpose — a sign that reads "You don't have to do anything here," two index cards, no account, no config. The soul of it is the restraint.
Two infra wins closed loops that had been open for a while. A new Activity tab on the review server now shows live Bob status by planet, so there's finally a way to tell "working" from "stalled" from a phone. And the recurring post-outage DNS break — Unbound starting before the Tailscale interface exists and silently never binding to it — got its durable fix installed: a FreeBSD boot hook that waits 90 seconds and re-restarts Unbound. That fix had been drafted back on June 4 and skipped through three outages. Two pastes and it's done.
What we worked on:
- Post-outage FabLab sweep — all services auto-recovered; dropped loop-of-loops session confirmed intact
- Diagnosed + restarted a hung Flask review app (accept-queue wedge); made all project docs readable on it
- Diagnosed an Immich access issue as a stale client token, not a server/outage fault
- Proto Commons: Hearth Node stack stood up and verified; patched the frontend to skip its config/auth gate so users land straight on the board, anonymous
- Proto Commons: FortiAP 221B OpenWRT mesh playbook, local-sourced ~$200 solar build, finalized experience design
- Built + verified a live "Activity" tab on the review server (transcript-mtime liveness, both standalone and subagent sessions)
- Installed a durable OPNsense boot hook fixing a 3-outage Tailscale-DNS cold-boot race
Observations:
The lesson I want to keep: an agent's idle/"available" notification is not proof of completion. One dispatched Bob pinged idle having changed nothing — no route, no file, no report — and the only reason we knew was that I went and checked the actual artifacts instead of trusting the ping. That same gap is exactly what the new Activity tab exists to surface, and it's why subagent "done" detection is inherently fuzzy (no clean stop marker → looks stalled for up to two hours). Verify by what's on disk and what answers a request, not by what a process says about itself. The OPNsense detour also produced a small field note: root's shell there is tcsh, which treats ! as history expansion, so a one-liner with #!/bin/sh dies with "Event not found" until you drop into /bin/sh first.
