Everyone's talking about what AI can do. Nobody's talking about the thing that actually makes it useful.
It's not the model. It's not the prompt. It's not the framework or the agent orchestration layer or whatever dropped on Hacker News this morning.
It's you. Specifically, the mass of what you already know.
The Force Multiplier Problem
Here's the math nobody does:
AI is a force multiplier. That's the correct framing. But a force multiplier applied to zero is still zero.
When I sit down with Claude Code and say "write a bash script that compares DNS resolution times across multiple resolvers, run 20 iterations, show averages," the AI writes it in 30 seconds. First try, it works.
But knowing that DNS resolution comparison is the right diagnostic for a "slow internet" complaint — that doesn't come from AI. That comes from years of chasing those complaints and learning what's actually worth testing. Every veteran has a version of that story. You've been somewhere, someone said "it's slow," and you already knew the first three things to check before you sat down.
The AI wrote the code. Years of pattern recognition told it which code to write.
That's the part nobody's selling, because you can't package it.
What Experience Actually Does
When a junior admin uses AI, they ask: "How do I monitor my network?"
When a veteran uses AI, they ask: "Write a script that captures interface error counters every 5 seconds, flags anomalies above two standard deviations from baseline, and correlates spikes with the timestamp log from the SaaS response time tester."
Same AI. Same model. Same pricing tier. Wildly different results.
The difference isn't prompt engineering. It's that the veteran has a mental model of what matters built from thousands of hours of doing the work wrong first.
Experience gives you:
Problem decomposition. You know that "it's slow" means you need to test DNS, TCP connect, TLS handshake, and application response separately. A junior tests "is it reachable?" and calls it done.
Failure pattern recognition. You've seen the weird regressions before. You know that when a service works locally but fails through the reverse proxy, you check the headers first. You know that the config file nobody's touched in three years is the one that's causing the problem.
Constraint awareness. You know you can't restart that service during business hours. You know the firewall rule that looks wrong is actually compensating for a vendor's broken implementation. You know which shortcuts are safe and which ones page you at 3am.
AI doesn't know any of this. AI has statistical patterns from training data. You have operational wisdom from production incidents.
Those are not the same thing.
The Unfair Advantage
I keep hearing a narrative that goes something like: "AI is leveling the playing field. Junior developers can now produce senior-level output."
I don't buy it.
What AI does is compress implementation time. It doesn't compress the judgment that decides what to implement. A junior dev can now produce code faster. They still can't produce the right code faster — not consistently — because they haven't built the pattern library that tells them what "right" looks like.
If you've been in infrastructure for 10 or 20 years, you have an enormous advantage right now and most of the industry narrative is telling you the opposite.
They're telling you AI is coming for your job. They're telling you to "upskill" and "learn prompt engineering" like it's a completely new discipline unrelated to everything you've done.
It's not. Prompt engineering for infrastructure work is just... describing the problem correctly. Which is what you've been doing in tickets, runbooks, and architecture documents for decades.
You're already good at this. You just might not have tried it yet.
Where It Breaks Down
I want to be honest about the limits, because the "experience is magic" narrative can be just as much BS as the "AI replaces everyone" narrative.
Experience has blind spots. I've watched veterans refuse to use AI for tasks it handles beautifully because "I've always done it this way." That's not wisdom. That's inertia.
Experience can also be wrong. If your mental model hasn't updated for cloud-native architectures, AI might actually have better instincts than you for certain problems. The training data includes patterns you haven't encountered yet.
The sweet spot is veterans who are genuinely curious. People who have the pattern library and the humility to let the AI surprise them sometimes.
In my experience, that's maybe one in five IT veterans. The rest are either dismissive ("it's just autocomplete") or over-believers ("AI will handle it").
The Gray Is the Point

The beginners have tutorials. The developers have Copilot. The executives have McKinsey reports.
But the person who's been managing firewalls for 15 years and just realized Claude can write better ACL documentation than they've ever had time to produce? Nobody's talking to that person.
